- BODY AND SOUL:

Story of Anita Roddick and The Body Shop
By Anita Roddick
Crown Publishers, NYC, 1993
pp 256, Paperback
- BUSINESS MASTERY:
A Business Planning Guide For Creating A fulfilling, Thriving Business
And Keeping It Successful, 2nd Edition
By Cherie M Sohnen-Moe
Sohnen-Moe Associates, Tucson, AZ, 1997
pp 424, Paperback, $24.95This well-organized workbook, written by an individual who is as much a businesswoman as she was a massage therapist, is an effective first book to turn to for MTs who (should) feel the need to learn about the skills necessary to build a successful business as a practicing massage therapist. BUSINESS MASTERY is a manual that actively engages each of its readers in a series of learning experiences directly involved in MT "as a thriving business." As such, it includes chapters on Initial Considerations; Building a Strong Foundation; Practice Management; Marketing; The Business Plan; and Self Management.
The chapter on Marketing is especially valuable, for in it Sohnen-Moe takes a realistic, kid-gloves off approach to building a viable MT practice. "Barriers to success need not become blockades," assures Sohnen-Moe, and she provides strategies to overcome the most likely ones. Material like this should find its way into the curriculum of our Massage Therapy schools. Best of all, with each edition--now its third--the book keeps getting more practical, as it gets more professional and better looking!

- MASSAGE:
A Career At Your Fingertips, 3rd Edition
By Martin Ashley
Enterprise Publishing, 1996
pp 286, PaperbackThis is a book that invites open discussion of the many issues in Massage Therapy that involve the true prospects for professional and financial success for the committed massage therapist. Already in its second edition, it is a book that should prove to be invaluable to anyone considering a career in MT. In realistic terms, it covers its subject from A to Z. This includes the hazards and pitfalls of working too long in any of the commercial massage settings, none of which can fulfill any notion of a career in MT. Optimistically, every helpful detail about the how, when, where, and why to open one's own practice is emphasized. Eventhough you may not agree with some of the opinions of the author, the book nevertheless comes very close to must reading for MT candidates and new MT school graduates.
- MINDING HER OWN BUSINESS:
The Self-Employed Woman's Guide to Taxes and Recordkeeping, 2nd Edition
By Jan Zobel, EA
Easthill Press, Oakland, CA, 1998
pp 285, PaperbackThis is a refreshing book. And--for the Massage Therapist newly arrived in her own "small business" as a professional and entrepreneur--it is an indispensable one. For the first time doing justice to women opening their own businesses (at present at twice the rate of men!), Jan Zobel makes it amply clear that self-employed women should and can mind their own businesses. That her book means to facilitate that job at hand is commendable. That it succeeds warrants our admiration--and a prominent place on the MT's bookshelf.
Explaining in detail "how money works" and "its place in their lives," Zobel answers the most frequently asked questions put to her in some 18 years of preparing financial reports and tax returns for women taking their first steps in running their own modest enterprise and mastering its basics: the terminology (including the"kind" of business to establish); all the paper-work involved and indispensable recordkeeping (withmodel forms in the process of being completed); all the ins-and-outs of paying taxes (including the IRS's papery requirements and illustrated tax forms); and more. All of this Zobel accomplishes with clarity and directness, reflecting her many years as a successful teacher of these matters as well as an expert tax consultant.
Taking the fear out of doing "financial things," still too common a fear among women otherwise quite courageous and enterprising as self-employed individuals, is the goal of Zobel's book--and for the mindful reader "Minding Her Own Business" gets that job done within its 200 compact, lucid, inviting, and encouraging pages. Smart men will of course benefit from this book just as much.
